Danny Brown, Epic Change: "Tweetsgiving" - 12for12k Challenge - Spread Gratitude Across the Web

The 12for12k Challenge is the combination of social media awareness and fund-raising that aims to change the lives of millions worldwide. Founded by business consultant Danny Brown, its aim is to raise awareness and funds for 12 charities over the course of 2009, with a new charity being supported every month. The concept is simple:

    12 months of the year
12 charities, a different charity each month
    $12,000 per charity

    "Tweetsgiving"

    Spread Gratitude Across the Web

While TweetsGiving won’t begin until November 24th, you can get involved NOW in our online groundswell of gratitude that will blanket the web with images, videos, songs and stories of everything that we’re grateful for. Just take these three easy steps (four for extra credit!) to get involved now:

    STEP #1. Join the Community

Click here to register for the Epic Change community and confirm your registration via email. In the community we’ll collaborate & conspire in advance of TweetsGiving to get ready for the big celebration. Of course, you can participate without joining the community too by sharing your gratitude with the #tweetsgiving tag anywhere you’d like on the web November 24 – 26…

    STEP #2. Find your Tribe(s)

Once you’ve registered, click on the online group(s) below where you’d like to share your gratitude from November 24 – 26. Once you’ve navigated to the group you’re interested in, use the gray “Join Group +” button to join the fun. Once you’re in, you can share ideas with fellow community members and conspire to create the most grateful day on earth.

STEP #3: Give in Honor of Your Gratitude*

*Optional, of course, but giving feels good. Besides, what would TweetsGIVING be without the giving? We’re hoping you’ll make a gift to TweetsGiving in honor of whatever you’re grateful for. All proceeds from TweetsGiving will go towards building an additional classroom, orphanage/boarding facility, cafeteria and library at Epic Change’s partner school in Tanzania, and to finding and funding future Epic Fellows like the school’s founder, Mama Lucy.
Contribute now by selecting the amount you want to donate from the drop-down menu in the widget below and then clicking on the orange “GIVE” button (link on 12for12k Blog).

    EXTRA CREDIT: Find 10 Friends

Gratitude is far better when it’s shared among friends. If you’re willing to find 10 friends to join our thankful tribe by 11/26/09, you’re invited to join our exclusive Wild Turkeys team where the tribe will strategize about how to grow our groundswell of gratitude to include people across the globe.

    "Social Media" ...It's a conversation...

I was just going through my email - "clearing the box" while having coffee at one my fav local community coffee shops - "The Coffee and Tea Zone" ...as is my Friday morning ritual...

    - and, as I read the message (excerpted below) from a new client, it occurred to me that his request contained something that I have been pondering all week... how do you really "use" social media?

Well, first of all, to "correct myself", one doesn't "use it"... one participates... it is simply a conversation.
-"use" beyond that, can quickly just become annoying noise...

Recently, I have been more than impressed and humbled by being able to participate in personal and direct messages and conversations with the likes of Chris Brogan and Danny Brown. These guys ("guys"... they are figurative "giants" really! personable, nice, "gentle giants", but giants nonetheless ) ...find a way to organize their daily lifestyle, moments... precious time to directly answer and converse on a personal level with many, many people... constantly... every day....

It is after all "Social Media". They literally have 100's of thousands of "followers"...but, somehow they find a way to "have the conversation..." And, this is what I find to be most impressive and confounding... and, am observing to be the "Secret" to theirs and others like themselves' "success"...

I like many, am still learning and trying to figure "it" out? I suspect and am also learning...that part of it is rather "Zen like".... that is... one must "just be"... and become a willing and calmly active participant in the "happening"... In other words, don't "try" so hard... [I'm hearing a Yoda voice now... : )]

One thing that is certain and very obvious... "being personal" is not optional! The example and model is there...

    my email conversation:

    Hi Jay,
I apologize for my confusion....I'm not the "brightest bulb in the box" when it comes to Facebook...or computers!!
Can you give me an idea of exactly what to do with each of the names and addresses you gave me? Once I understand it I will never forget..it's just....understanding it??
Maybe just take one of the addresses like _____________ and tell me step by step how to get them on my Facebook?
Sorry for the request... but computers and I have not been very close friends@@??##??
    Thanks Jay - For Everything!!
    J
    J
no worries... and, I strongly disagree!
You are refreshingly one of the "brightest bulbs" that I have met in a long time...
I am thankful to be in the company of the likes of you, L, and "Dr. Pat"!

    re Facebook
You are naturally very social, so once you get "it"...the learning curve will be short...
Think of "it" as just talking...having a conversation...
-that is the true heart of "social media''...
-there is a lot of "noise" out there as "marketers" try to flatten the learning curve...
-and, many are mistakenly just applying old practices to the new medium (including me...I have been guilty...)

...but, this one... "Social Media" is different...

    ...and, alas, I blab...

    one step at a time...

step 1: simply "join"...ask for a "friendship", become a "fan", or join the "group" -whichever applies...

    step 2: introduce yourself

step 3: join the conversation...or start one...

step 4: post "helpful links"... items of "mutual interest" and incl your own...

    step 5: coming soon....

    HAVE FUN!!!

    : )

    Jay
